Specification Checklist
Pine, Spruce, or Larch. Pine standard with treatment, Larch acceptable untreated above ground.
Pointed top (traditional), domed top (modern), or flat top. Pointed sheds water best.
60–100mm typical. Larger diameter = more substantial appearance, longer lifespan.
1.0–1.8m above ground. Specify visible height + 600mm below for foundation.
Use Class 4 pressure treatment essential for ground contact. UC3 for above-ground only.
Concrete-set posts or post-supports. Minimum 600mm depth in stable ground.
Top rail for visual continuity, optional middle rail for strength.
Touching (full privacy), 20mm gap (semi-privacy), wider (decorative only).

Common Errors
UC3 treatment in ground contact
Correction: Always UC4 for in-ground portion. UC3 fails within 5–10 years at the ground line.
No concrete foundation
Correction: Direct soil setting with no concrete causes lean and fail. Concrete-set is essential for stability.
Galvanised fixings with Larch
Correction: Larch tannins corrode galvanised steel and cause black streaks. Always stainless steel A2 minimum.
No water shedding detail at top
Correction: Flat tops absorb water and rot. Pointed or domed tops shed water effectively.

Frequently Asked
Properly treated and detailed: 15–25 years. Untreated pine in ground contact: 3–7 years. Larch above ground: 20–30 years untreated.
Concrete-set is most durable (lifespan matches palisade). Steel post-supports allow easier replacement but the metal-timber junction can rot prematurely if not detailed correctly.
For heights above 1.2m, top rail is mandatory for stability. Above 1.5m, add middle rail. Without rails, palisades flex and gap over time.
