Glulam (BSH) specification requires more parameters than solid timber — strength class, appearance class, adhesive, layup, and service class all affect cost, lead time, and architectural outcome. This template provides a complete clause aligned with EN 14080:2013 and BS EN 14080:2013+A1:2023.

Specification Checklist
GL24h, GL28h, or GL32h. Higher classes allow longer spans / smaller sections at premium cost.
Industrial / Standard / Architectural. Architectural required for any exposed application.
Homogeneous (h) or Combined (c). Homogeneous = same grade throughout. Combined = higher grade outer laminations.
Type I (all service classes) or Type II (Service Class 1 only). Always specify Type I for safety margin.
Spruce or Pine for softwood glulam. Larch or Douglas Fir available at premium.
1 (heated internal), 2 (covered external), or 3 (exposed). Affects design and adhesive selection.
Sanded (Architectural class) or planed (Standard). Affects cost.
Specify pre-camber for long spans. Specify radius for curved beams.

Common Errors
Specifying "Glulam" without strength class
Correction: Always state GL24h, GL28h, or GL32h. Higher classes are 10–25% more expensive but allow smaller sections.
Omitting appearance class
Correction: Architectural class adds 15–25% cost but is essential for exposed applications. Specify explicitly.
Type II adhesive in unprotected location
Correction: Type II is only for Service Class 1. Specify Type I for any beam that might experience humidity.
No camber specified for long spans
Correction: Spans over 8m should be pre-cambered to compensate for long-term creep deflection. L/200 is typical.

GL28h has 17% higher bending strength (28 vs 24 N/mm²) and slightly higher stiffness. GL28h allows ~10% longer spans or smaller sections at typically 8–15% premium over GL24h.
Whenever the glulam beam will be visible in the finished building. Architectural class has knot-free outer laminations, filled surface defects, and sanded finish. Industrial class is acceptable only for fully concealed structure.
Yes, for Service Class 2 (covered, ventilated) or Service Class 3 (fully exposed). For SC2/SC3, specify Type I adhesive and ensure the beam is detailed to shed water from horizontal surfaces.
Standard sections (rectangular, sub-12m) ship within 2–4 weeks. Custom sections, curved beams, or sections over 800mm deep require 6–12 weeks. Order early in project programme.
