Fire-rated timber door specification must cover the door leaf, frame, intumescent seals, ironmongery, and gaps as a single tested assembly. Specifying just "FD30 door" without the frame and ironmongery is the most common compliance failure. This template covers the complete tested assembly per EN 1634-1.

Specification Checklist
FD30, FD60, FD90, FD120 (minutes). Per EN 1634-1 or BS 476-22 test certificate.
Door, frame, seals, glazing, and ironmongery must be a single tested combination — no mixing.
Solid timber, particleboard core, or glazed. Veneer or paint finish to match architecture.
Solid hardwood (typically Oak or Sapele) or hardwood-clad softwood. Frame is part of the test.
Combined intumescent + smoke seal, fitted in frame groove (or door edge).
Pyran or Pyroguard glass, with intumescent glazing strip per door manufacturer.
CE-marked fire door hinges, 3 minimum per leaf, with intumescent pads if required.
Self-closing device per BS EN 1154, controlled closing.
3mm head and side, 8mm threshold maximum (or as per test certificate).
BWF Fire Door Alliance Q-Mark or equivalent. Each door uniquely identified.

Common Errors
Mixing door leaf from one supplier with frame from another
Correction: Fire doors are tested as complete assemblies. Always specify "tested combination" from a single Q-Mark certified supplier.
No intumescent seals
Correction: Mandatory for FD30+. Without seals, the assembly fails at first sign of smoke.
Generic "FD30 hinges"
Correction: Specify CE-marked Grade 14 fire-tested hinges. Standard hinges may not be tested for fire performance.
Gaps wider than test certificate
Correction: Each test certificate states maximum gaps. Site adjustment must stay within these limits.
No identification marking
Correction: Each fire door must be uniquely identified for inspection and replacement traceability.
